Sedum
I love growing sedums. Every year I discover new ones. They come in all shapes & sizes & colors that are fun & very easy to grow. Most are true perennial plants. Sedum is a large genus of succulent plants. Some are known as "Hen & Chicks". Most sedums love full sun in fact many demand it for best growing performance. But I've discovered some kinds appreciate protection from brutal afternoon sun. And still others prefer mostly shade. The diversity of these plants is amazing. Once established they need very minimal care. Sedums entertain me. Yes, I'm easy! I have them planted all over the place. Then my Miss Kitty eats them. She's a sloppy eater & spits little segments here & there. They take-up roots & grow. I find them growing in most unexpected spots. I experiment putting different types of sedums in all sorts of containers. They do great but demand good drainage. Once I did a living wreath with sedums. Let's just say it wasn't one of my best successes. Most sedums are known for flourishing in rock gardens. Let your imagination be your guide when it comes to growing sedums. One of the best things about sedums is they are so easy to share with all your garden friends. You'll have fun! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedum
Tiniest Sedum I discovered this tiniest sedum summer '03. It grows like crazy! This is a 4 inch pot I stuck it in. It soon spilled out. I love it. It's my bestest, most favorite, teeniest, tiniest sedum ever, so far.
Worm Grass "Worm Grass" you gotta love it! It's so tiny & hearty & such a survivor! Miss Kitty alias: Tilda Mae; the 3rd Cat; loves to chew on sedums. So they get scattered around the planting areas from her being a sloppy eater, dropping little pieces onto the ground where they take root & grow.
Sedum 'Bertram Anderson' Sedum 'Bertram Anderson': Just after a spring rain. Notice the stem color. He had to have a red label to set it off.
Sedum 'Vera Jamison' Another favorite. The color is so awesome.
Platycladus Sedum Gray-blue leaves with fringed edges
This sedum has done well for me in partial shade. I love the blue color & the thick substance of the uniquely shaped leaves. It'a a favorite!
Sedum 'Stardust' Blooms white! It's fun!
This plant is a sport of sedum, Autumn Joy. The familiar pink one we all know & love in late summer / early fall. When other plants are winding down these sedums display a brilliant show of color. They are very low maintenance & anyone can grow them. Just give them lots of sun. Very drought tolerant once established. The only problem I've encountered with these plants is they plop over from the heavy blooming. I've decided to try wire peony hoops or propping them up with rocks. These plants are wonderful to share with garden friends, too. Just cut the stem, stick it in dirt, & watch it grow. They can also be propagated by root division. That means use a clean spade to chop out a piece. Or dig the whole plant up & cut it into as many pieces as you would want. Also in early spring it is very easy to break off new starts. I cut these sedums off after they are done blooming. However, spent flowers could provide winter interest to the garden. They are very long-lived perennials.
In it's third year Sedum 'Stardust' has began reverting back to pink. It was quite fun to see!
Sedum 'Matrona'
Hen & Chicks
Golden Carpet Sedum Acre (perennial)
My daughter had this sedum last summer in a little red wagon. It grew like crazy & was so cute. I had to have it. It's great for sharing with all your garden friends. I've already shared mine this spring '05. It's fun!
Sedum 'Purple Emperor' lg sedum / very dark purple/red foliage
Sedum 'Angelina' - 3-6" tall Shines with brillant golden-yellow foliage. Low growing, mat forming needle-like evergreen leaves that look like a yellow, miniature spruce. Yellow flowers appear in late summer on 6-8" stems. |
