hen & chicks

May 2007

Sedums, Hen & Chicks, & succulents are so much fun, such interesting characters, demanding only a proper growing environment. These new, tiny specimen are a favorite 2007. I kept moving them until a spot was found where they were happy. Even if they do not survive winter - they brought joy into my summer. I don't know the name. They were sold as assorted sedums. They stayed tiny so I will call them mini-hen & chicks.

herb pot

This little herb pot was fun all summer & is over-wintering under indoor lighting. I really like the red sedum & the creeping thyme & the spider-webbed, mini-hen & chicks. The tiny flower blossoms are so perfect & such a pretty pink.

strawberry pot

Big Pot! Little Pot!

You might guess I have a fetish for strawberry pots. I painted the big one myself at a ceramics shop. This is how it looked after living in a south window in Ron's shop all winter long. I kept rotating it. It can't stay out in winter as it would get too wet, & too cold, & the plants would rot. The cats nibbled on it in the garage / shop as that is their heated winter-home also. Some sedums are poisonous which concerned me; but the cats survived eating the sedum, & the sedum survived being eaten by the cats. Some of the sedums got real long & lanky. You can see I just chopped them off & they grew very nicely again.

Hosta 'Kabitan' is famously adored by many hosta connoisseurs. I really hadn't paid much attention to the plant but have heard others raving about it. Early this spring (2008) my daughter , Robin & I were walking in her gardens where 'Kabitan' was just picture perfect, so lovely, so ruffled, so brightly colored, so little, so fun. I was going gaga over it. Robin very graciously offered to share it with me. She loves giving plants to her mom. I rushed home with it and plopped it in a bright orange pot. It makes me smile every time I see it.
