Garden Bed #5 - page 5
Hosta 'Old Glory'O - Hans Hansen / Shady Oaks Nursery
Hosta 'Old Glory' has become a favorite in Marlys' Garden. The plant was given to me by neighbor, Trudy who was in love with the plant at the time. The immature plant didn't look like much but I planted it in a fairly sunny locale. After 3 or 4 years of just being there, 'Old Glory' unfurled fabulous colors waving them triumphantly above others in bed #5C. It is truly a spectacular plant and should be included in every shade garden - IMHO. The plant does not require any special attention to become a beautiful beacon of color, shape, form, & texture in the shade garden; and it really tolerates quite a bit of sunshine, in fact demands it to keep its colors flying brightly. Awesome Plant! MM "Hans brings us a vigorous sport from H. 'Glory', gold heart-shaped leaves have an uneven dark green border and a third color is apparent where the primary colors overlap. Prominent veins and a rippled margin topped with lavender flowers create a superior specimen. This is a medium-size plant with a lighter shade of green in the center with a dark green edge. It also has some very prominent veins in the leaves."

Hosta 'Rock Princess'O - Maekawa / Japan - 1936
"Oval/lance shaped leaves, glossy green above, glossy lighter green below with wavy margins. Purple dotted scapes with flowers which are lavender outside and purple striped inside."
I don't know what makes this little mini-hosta any different than any H 'Venusta' but I was on vacation and there the sweet little thing was & well, I just couldn't resist. I'm not sorry. Rock Princess is a sweet little green thing that performs a wonderful flower show too. I'm likin' it!!! |
